Topic Proposal
Abstract
This paper will be a rhetorical analysis of the strategies used by the author to convey his or her message through the use of a specific artifact such a commercial or advertisement. My topic is the role that the female gender plays in mass media. Therefore, I will be analyzing the strategies used in my artifact that the author uses to convince the audience about the female role such as the place, time, word choice, use of images and other elements that add up to the purpose of the advertisement.
Rationale
I am doing this project as a continuation of my previous research about the role that each gender plays in social media. The purpose is to identify the factors that have led to the creation of stereotypes in society and have consequences such as inequality and over expectations towards women. Now that I have learned about the roles that media creates for each gender, I will analyze the way I n how they do it. The elements and strategies used to convey their message and create a stereotype that is beneficial for mass media because it results in the consuming of the advertised product. It is important to learn and address this type of issues because they have consequences in people and sometimes we don’t realize. This actions usually affect a person since an early age but are not reflected until their teenage years, then is too late to make a change or understand the origin of the problem. What motivates me to do this topic is my Rhetoric and Writing Studies class where we have been analyzing the female stereotype in places such as advertisements and I have become self-conscious about the bad consequences that this stereotypes have for women.
Tentative Bibliography
The type of sources that I will analyze will most likely be advertisements. I have several options where I can choose from and each one has a different approach that can be used. For example, commercials in television are a good source to analyze because they are moving images that convey a message, and to create them, the producers use specific elements such as models, context of commercial, when are they screening it, word choice and back ground elements. Another option is advertisement in images such as magazines or billboards. These are much simpler because they do not move, they just capture one scene, but this scene is filled with elements that convey a message. This type of advertisement is seen more frequently because it is easier and faster to look at it and therefore it is very effective. My last option would be movies, TV series or videos. This sources are not advertisements but are also part of mass media. They have longer duration and stereotypes are seen for a longer time. Such as in a movie where the mother is shown as in charge of cleaning, making dinner and taking care of the family during the entire film. This type of sources show stereotypes in more real situations and even though they are not seen as much as the other sources, they are effective because they have longer duration and the stereotype is consistent throughout the entire film or video.
Comment
I think that it would be more effective to analyze not only one artifact but two, one about women and one about men. This would give me an idea of the difference between the strategies used for each gender to convey their message. I would have a perspective of each side. I would like to know if this would be allowed and if it would be helpful or not.
