My name is Andres Najera. I am 18 years old. I was born and raised in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico. I am currently enrolled in the University of Texas at El Paso, pursuing a bachelor´s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Ever since when I was a child, I've had an interest in technology and robotics. I always dissembled any electronic device to learn (or at least try) what was on the inside and how it worked. I found it fascinating that so many little components came together to perform specific actions, all man-made. That is why I decided to study engineering.
I have always been a good student. I don´t see myself as a smart person, but rather as a disciplined person. Even though I find easy to learn and understand some things, I think it´s more important to have discipline in every aspect of my life. I like to study at least one or two weeks before tests, review notes after class, read the textbooks, and do homework to practice. But overall, I like to have an open mind. Be willing to learn something new every day, anything from anyone. I have been trying to do this since a couple years and even though I make mistakes, I am getting where I want to be, I just need to have discipline. About 4 years ago, I was finishing high school in Mexico in a classroom with only 7 students. No one expected nothing from us. Today, by working hard, I have received a scholarship from UTEP; being the only way possible to me to go to college.
Even though I am proud of who I am and what I have accomplished, what makes me the most proud and thankful is my family. I would not be who I am if it wasn´t for my mom, my brother and my friends. My family has been for my through every situation. I have seen everything that my mom does for me and my brother, to help us move forward instead of stepping back. She made me the man I am and I would do anything for her without even considering it.
I spend most of my weekends at church. I am a coordinator of Confirmation classes, which is part of the Catholic church. I really enjoy what I do there and my community, however, I don´t discriminate or try to convert others. I like to learn apologetics, which is the defense of our beliefs, however, I practice more ecumenism, which is the respect of someone else´s beliefs.
